Grief tore through a Nakini, Naitasiri family yesterday as news arrived from Australia of a violent end to a mother’s long struggle to provide for her children.
Anaseini Nai Waqavuki, 47, who left Fiji in 2018 chasing dignity, work and hope, was allegedly killed by stab wounds alongside a man she allegedly lived with in Sydney.
The tragedy unfolded thousands of kilometres away, yet its pain landed heavily at home, where her three children aged 17, 14 and 12 now face life without their mother.
Her family learned of her death through a relative in Australia before Australian police formally made contact yesterday.
Ms Waqavuki, a care nurse, had been supporting her children from afar, sending what she could while building a life overseas.
Her mother Saini Waqavuki, 65, insists there was no romantic relationship between her daughter and the man who was found outside the house with stab wounds.
Now, amid shock and unanswered questions, a grandmother prepares to travel to Australia with her grandchildren to bury a daughter whose sacrifice ended in heartbreak.
