The family of a 33-year-old man accused of igniting a fire at Suva’s Totogo Police Station in 2023 is ready to take responsibility for his welfare.

His lawyer Ronal Singh of Munro Leys also told the High Court in Suva that Sabastian Sipeli Rakai’s, family would ensure Mr Rakai takes his medication.

Mr Rakai’s trial began and concluded earlier this month for a count each of attempted arson and damaging property.

The prosecution alleged on September 21, 2023, he threatened five police officers by hurling a benzene-filled bottle at them and brandishing a hammer.

On that same day, he allegedly tossed a bottle filled with fuel into the police station, causing damage to equipment.

During closing submissions on July 24, Justice Usaia Ratuvili said the doctor’s report showed the accused suffered from schizophrenia.

Mr Singh said both parties were seeking a “special verdict”, taking into account Mr Rakai’s mental condition.

Justice Ratuvili will deliver his verdict on August 28.
