VISHWA Raju and his family are still trying to come to terms with the unfortunate events that unfolded last Friday.

The family lost their $450,000 house after it was destroyed in a fire at Cargill Rd, Davuilevu Housing in Nausori.

The 31-year-old said his parents and sister were on their way to town when a neighbour informed them via phone about the unfortunate incident.

He said the fire could have started from their prayer area attached to their home.

“Now we are forced to stay in a small house with seven members of the family. We are trying to recover from this incident because the house that we have been living in for over 20 years has been destroyed,” Mr Raju said.

“I was made aware of the incident while at work and then I tried calling the emergency number 910, but it was not getting through. Then I noticed a rescue car passing by so I stopped it and asked the officials inside to call the National Fire Authority; the call went through and they attended to the incident,” he claimed.

He claimed by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the house was in flames and it was late to save it.

National Fire Authority chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said firefighters from Valelevu and Nausori were deployed to the scene.
