* What is the traditional protocol that takes place when the Roko Tui Bau passes on?
Spokesman for the Roko Tui Bau (masau) and members of the Roko Tui Bau’s family (the Naicobocobo clan) will sit and discuss and the result of their deliberations will be traditionally conveyed by spokesman to the turaga Vunivalu na Tui Kaba to officially announce to him of the death.
The Vunivalu will then decide where (the chief and vanua) the traditional message (na i rogo vakavanua) should be sent of the Roko Tui Bau’s passing.
The turaga Roko Tui Bau is the traditional leader of the yavusa Ratu which includes the Roko Tui Kiuva, Roko Tui Viwa, the vanua o’ Tai in the upper Vugalei, the vanua o Naselai and Natogadravu, the vanua o Moturiki, the vanua o Bureta in Ovalau, and Tovu in Nairai.
While the yavusa Ratu also existed in most parts of Fiji during pre-colonial days, after that era these were the vanua that came under the Roko Tui Bau’s leadership.
