THERE’S just no place like Hong Kong for a Fiji 7s player.
It’s where Fijian ruggers write new chapters of rugby history for themselves, their families, their legacies and the nation.
And as the hours count down to kicking off the 50th edition of the Hong Kong 7s tomorrow, it is the very message Fiji Airways
Fiji men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has drilled into his squad.
Speaking from Hong Kong yesterday, he shared how the squad reflected on the impact of former players that paved the way for them and the reputation Fiji had there.
“We have a legacy here and the last time we won, we talked about it with the boys. Former players have laid the legacy for us to be here,” Kolinisau said.
“I know when we’re here, we can tell the stories that we have won a lot in Hong Kong and I said ‘What are the stories we will write for the future generations to come? Or what stories are you going to leave?’.”
Kolinisau, the former skipper of the 7s side, has tasted glory at Hong Kong several times especially under the guidance of former head coach Ben Ryan.
With a rich legacy there and the motive to perform to their best, Kolinisau added how these were driven forth by the desire to remain consistent.
“The biggest motivation is just making sure that we try and be consistent in the championship and make sure we stay on top of the series and because we’re fighting for spots in the series and if you don’t do well, the bottom four gets relegated to the SVNS 2 and our families as well,” he said.
Tomorrow, Fiji faces Germany in their first pool match at 5.11pm, Great Britain at 8.21pm and on Saturday, Japan at 8.44pm.
Fiji last won the Hong Kong 7s in 2019 under the guidance of then head coach Gareth Baber.
