LELEAN Memorial School (LMS) Knights U17 captain Kaveni Tuisavura is emerging as one of the most exciting prospects to watch in the upcoming Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) national championships this weekend at the Buckhurst and Bidesi grounds in Suva.
Despite his modest stature, Tuisavura’s leadership, skill, and rugby league intelligence has been pivotal in driving his team’s success, marking him out as a standout talent on the national stage.
Originally from Vuci, Tokatoka in Tailevu, the 17-year-old’s leadership on the field keeps the team focused, while his exceptional play-making abilities consistently spark attacking opportunities for his side.
In defence, Tuisavura regularly makes crucial calls, organising his team in anticipation of the opposition’s attacking patterns.
Despite his small stature, he does not shy away from the physical demands of the game, from absorbing big hits to making vital tackles that keep the opposition at bay.
LMS head coach Qio Filipe, who first spotted Tuisavura when he was in Year Nine, has hailed him as one of the best players he has ever coached in high school rugby league.
“Kaveni (Tuisavura) is one student who actively listens on and off the field, that’s why he excels not only on the rugby field but also in his academic studies inside the classroom,” he explained.
Filipe adds that what Tuisavura lacks in size, he more than makes up for in confidence, presence and work ethic.
“Although he is small in stature, he is able to command the respect of these big players; he has a commanding voice for a small guy, a resilient fortitude and a mental clarity far beyond his age,” he said.
“That’s why I chose him to lead this team; a role he has embraced and continues to excel in.”
Looking beyond the national championships, Filipe believes his captain is destined to become an international star and that a strong performance this weekend will bring him a step closer to that dream.
“I believe he is on the right track; his faith and determination in his ability and what he continuously brings to the team, I am confident something great awaits him in the future,” he said.
The FSSRL national quarter-finals will be held this weekend at the Buchurst and Bidesi Park in Suva.
Fixtures for the quarter-finals were yet to be confirmed when this edition went to press.
