CUTTING sugar cane and other means of employment were the means through which the Island Boys men’s sevens rugby team had to fund their way into the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s, which starts today.

The team is made up of players from Mali Island off the northern coast of Vanua Levu and team captain Jone Kolivuso said the long distance travelled from Vanua Levu to Viti Levu via boat and bus meant they would participate with the intent of aiming to win and to gain exposure with the vast range of rugby talent showcased.

“This is also the first time the Island Boys team from Mali will compete in the Marist 7s and we are so excited for it,” Kolivuso said.

And his call for support for supporters who hail from Mali is a passionate one.

“We are calling on all our supporters and those who hail from Mali to come out in numbers and support us in the tournament.”

The tournament starts today with the under-21 and women’s divisions.
