THE need to review the existing Explosives Act is an issue that has been raised at various select communities under previous governments, says Vatukoula Gold Mines Ltd staff Tobia Seru.
Mr Seru told the press event in Tavua on Wednesday the issue was that of penalties under the current Act.
“Compared to the economic value of the explosives, it’s $100, but when you look at the repercussions of what the explosives do, it’s very dangerous,” he said.
“That’s why it’s called dangerous goods.”
Director of Mines Apete Soro said there would be a review of the law covering explosives and fireworks as part of the review of the Mining Act.
“The Act is being reviewed at the moment. We hope to get this through to the Cabinet by the third quarter of this financial year,” he said.
“With that, we will have a better understanding of the review of the explosives act as well.”
