A MAJOR challenge in Fiji’s fight against non-communicable diseases such as hypertension is not awareness but control, says Macuata sub-divisional medical officer Dr Amoo Bolaji.
“That is the real problem,” he said.
Dr Bolaji said more than enough awareness program had been conducted around the country on non-communicable diseases.
“People are aware, they have medication, but they are not managing the condition effectively.”
Speaking during a workshop at the Friendly North Inn in Labasa, he said this lack of control was evident in the number of patients presenting with dangerously high blood pressure levels.
“We are seeing readings of blood pressure of 180, 190 and even above 200. This is because of poor control.”
He said management was the key factor.
“You cannot change genetics, but you can control the condition.”
He warned that without improved control, cases of stroke and heart disease would continue to rise.
