EXECUTION will be the primary focus for the Fijiana XV team ahead of today’s crucial match against hosts Hong Kong in the WXV Global Series Challenger.
Head coach Wille Walker believes the team has made significant progress since he took up the role six weeks ago on 4 August, particularly in maintaining focus and intensity throughout the full 80 minutes.
However, against Hong Kong today, Walker has demanded a more clinical performance from his team.
“There is still a lot of work to be done, especially on our accuracy and the ability to finish off opportunities,” Walker explained.
“We created many opportunitites, made several line breaks, and beat defenders, but we let ourselves down a little with accuracy in those final moments. That is what I have challenged my players to rectify moving forward.”
Against Spain, the team failed to maintain the clinical defence they displayed against Japan the week prior.
Walker feels the team have made remarkable progress defensively since he joined but he believes further improvement is needed to instil a robust defensive strategy.
“That progress will continue around our defensive structures. Individually, we are working on the technical side of defence, including one-on-one tackling and body positioning,” he said.
“But at the same time, we need a structure that keeps us connected and able to stay together defensively.”
The Fijiana will take on Hong Kong tonight at 7.30pm at the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground.
