EXCLUSIVE – FCCC suspends electricity tariff for public consultation

Listen to this article:

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has suspended the implementation of the new electricity tariff rates, originally set to take effect on 1 January 2026, to allow for a 21-day public consultation.

FCCC said the decision follows “mixed feedback” and heightened public interest in the tariff structure announced on 19 December, following the FCCC’s regulatory assessment of Energy Fiji Limited’s (EFL) proposal.

The suspension provides an opportunity for households, businesses, consumer groups, industries, government departments, political parties, and youth representatives to submit their views.

“FCCC will publish the Non-Confidential version of EFL’s submission dated May 2025 on its website, where a copy of the Electricity Tariff Methodology can also currently be. Every consumer, trader – any concerned Fijian citizen – are invited to make submissions,” said FCCC.

Submissions can be made online or in writing, and the FCCC will also engage directly with stakeholders.

“This measure taken by the FCCC is an exception and all Fijians are urged to make submissions. FCCC will also be reaching out to stakeholders, and in addition to the online survey, the public can also make their submissions in writing.”

The commission emphasised that it operates independently, making regulatory decisions based on evidence, due process, and the long-term interests of consumers and the Fijian economy.

Details of the consultation process will be announced shortly.
