WHAT was supposed to be the first day of the new school year became moving day for 22-year-old Bale Lesunavanua and his family, who are among residents forced to vacate the Mead Rd Public Rental Board (PRB) housing complex in Nabua.

The PRB had issued an eviction directive after the buildings were deemed structurally unsafe.

Families have scrambled to find alternative accommodation before utilities are disconnected. Mr Lesunavanua said their electricity was cut last week despite fully paid bills, leaving only water connected. PRB general manager Timoci Naleba, however, clarified that the board had not disconnected power and advised affected residents to contact the Energy Fiji Ltd.

“The timing could not have been worse,” Mr Lesunavanua said.

“With two nephews in Year 8, we had to prepare for school while finding a new home.”

Relying on relatives, the family has temporarily moved into an unoccupied house. After 14 years at Mead Rd, the move was sudden and emotionally difficult, particularly for children adjusting to a new environment.
