The Fiji Airways Fijiana came agonisingly close to a much-needed victory but were denied 19-26 by a determined USA side in their second Pool B match at the Vancouver Sevens yesterday.

Silika Qalo gave Fiji the perfect start, crossing the tryline in the fifth minute to set the tone early. The USA fought back through two powerful tries from Ariana Ramsey, putting the pressure firmly back on the Fijiana.

Undeterred, Adi Vani Buleki struck in the 12th minute to level the scores at 12-12, with Kelerayani Luvu adding a vital conversion to keep Fiji in the hunt.

The tightly contested battle remained locked at 12-all deep into the second half, with both sides showcasing great skill and determination.

However, a crucial yellow card to Fiji in the latter stages handed the USA a numerical advantage.

Capitalising on the opportunity, Sariah Ibarra crossed for the match-winning try in the 16th minute, while Tahna Wilfley’s accurate conversions sealed the 26-19 result denying the Fijiana their first win of the tournament.
