ORGANIC farming communities across Fiji are better equipped to grow healthy food and strengthen resilient agro-ecological farming systems.
This follows the distribution of essential farm support tools to 195 organic farmers under the Pacific Organic Learning Farms Network project.
Implemented by the Pacific Community, the project provided spades, wheelbarrows, watering cans, pruning shears, compost bins, fencing materials, shade cloths, knapsack sprayers and other tools to support daily farming activities and sustainable production.
Project manager Fuatino Fatiaki said the support was designed to make farming more efficient for households that may struggle to afford basic equipment.
“This also helps in improving access to equipment for farming households that may struggle to afford essential tools,” Ms Fatiaki said.
“The project is also helping farmers focus on building productive and sustainable farms.”
She said strengthening farm clusters was important for building communities that could withstand future challenges.
“Agro-ecological farming systems are designed to support farmers sustainably over the long term.”
“Recent global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and rising fuel costs, have shown how vulnerable our food systems can be.”
Burenitu Village farmer Meli Nacola said the distribution had inspired farmers to continue their organic farming journey.
“Receiving these farm support tools has really boosted the morale of our farmers,” Mr Nacola said.
“It has encouraged many of us to continue our transition to organic farming.”
