The newly upgraded Ellington Wharf in Rakiraki was officially reopened today by Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau.
He said the project reflects the Government’s continued investment in critical transport infrastructure.
Ellington Wharf serves as a key maritime link between Viti Levu and Nabouwalu in Vanua Levu, facilitating passenger travel, reuniting families, and enabling the efficient movement of goods between Fiji’s two largest islands.
“The reopening of Ellington Wharf underscores our broader vision to create reliable, safe, and efficient transport links across Fiji. This wharf is a critical artery of economic activity, supporting local businesses, farmers, and entrepreneurs by improving access to markets and reducing travel time,” he said.
The Minister added that the upgraded wharf is expected to enhance safety and provide a more reliable service for both passengers and freight.
“These improvements will contribute directly to economic activity in Rakiraki and surrounding areas, while supporting national goals of regional integration and economic diversification.”
Minister also encouraged community members and key stakeholders to work together to maximise the benefits of the facility and ensure its long-term sustainability.
As part of the works, the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) upgraded 366 metres of unsealed road and the jetty area to sealed pavement, and installed five street lights at the wharf to improve safety, accessibility, and ease of movement for users.
