The first day of the Eastern Amateur Golf Championships was held at the Fiji Gold Club in Vatuwaqa yesterday.

According to tournament director Rohit Chandra, the competition is an opportunity for elite golfer to get world ranking points.

“This tournament is more so for the elite players, so we are looking at something called World Ranking,” he explained.

“The player who finishes first with a score that’s meets the criteria for world ranking, he will basically get world ranking points, after which he will get invites to play in international tournaments next year after getting his world ranking.”

The battle for world ranking will be a 54-hole competition, 36 holes were played yesterday and 18 today.

Apart from the world raking tournament a separate competition is also on going in synch with the championship for the social golfers.

Chandra says the world ranking tournament began 5 years ago and has grown in stature ever since.

“So, the Eastern Amateur has been running for ten years now, and this world ranking came into effect five years ago,” Chandra said.

The tournament continues today at the Fiji Golf Course in Vatuwaqa.
