The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is reminding elderly people and those with underlying medical conditions to undergo thorough health checks before embarking on long-distance sea travel, following the death of an elderly man at the Natovi Jetty.

MSAF confirmed it was aware of the incident and extended its sympathies to the man’s family and loved ones.

The Authority noted that the situation did not occur onboard a vessel, but said it highlights the importance of prioritising health before travelling.

Members of the public are also being urged to take extra care during the current hot and humid conditions.

Travellers are encouraged to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water before and during their journey.

MSAF says it continues to work with stakeholders to promote safety and wellbeing across Fiji’s maritime sector and will keep reinforcing messages that help protect vulnerable travellers.
