THE stage is set. The wait is almost over.
For Lelean Memorial School and Suva Grammar School, today’s Vodafone Super Deans Championship under-18 final at HFC Bank National Stadium is more than a schoolboy rugby match.
It is a battle for the holy grail of Fiji secondary schools rugby and an opportunity to rewrite history after years of disappointment.
Both sides stormed into the final with convincing semi-final victories, confirming their place as the two best U18 teams in the competition.
Now, after years of coming close and falling short, they are just 80 minutes away from ending long title droughts.
For Lelean , it has been 12 years since the Deans trophy last found its way to Davuilevu.
For Grammar, the wait has stretched even longer — 21 years since the school last celebrated Deans glory.
And fittingly, two schools whose rivalry has been built through battles across the age grades will now settle the biggest contest of all.
Lelean captain Luke Daunirutu knows the task facing his side.
He identified the Grammar forward pack as the opposition’s most potent weapon, particularly after watching the way it operated in the semi-final.
“Grammar’s forwards last week kept changing their formation and that made it hard the opposition to defend and anticipate what they were going to do,” Daunirutu said.
That unpredictability has been a major focus for Lelean as it prepares for today’s showdown.
Daunirutu said his teammates understood the magnitude of the occasion and what it would take to bring the trophy back to the school.
“We have prepared well for this final and we know it is going to be a tough game,” he said.
But for the Lelean captain, the motivation runs deeper than the school crest on the jersey.
“We are not only representing our school. We are representing our families and the Lord Almighty as well,” he said.
