Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) expects electricity demand in Fiji to grow by around 5 per cent annually, with continued investment needed in power generation, transmission infrastructure and grid modernisation to meet future demand.
In EFL’s 2025 Annual Report, recently tabled in Parliament, Chief Executive Officer Fatiaki Gibson said electricity consumption continued to rise during 2025, driven by the country’s economic recovery.
“Electricity demand in Fiji continued to grow in 2025, reflecting economic recovery, increased tourism activity, expanding commercial operations, and growing residential energy consumption,” Mr Gibson said.
The report shows weighted average electricity demand increased by approximately 2 per cent in 2025, following a much stronger 9 per cent increase recorded in 2024.
While growth eased slightly compared with the previous year, Mr Gibson said the long-term outlook remains positive.
“Although growth moderated slightly compared with the previous year, the long-term outlook remains strong.”
He said forecasts indicate electricity demand will continue to increase significantly over the coming years.
“Electricity demand in Fiji is projected to grow by approximately 5 per cent annually, which will require continued investment in generation capacity, transmission infrastructure, and grid modernisation.”
Mr Gibson said EFL continues to maintain a diversified electricity generation portfolio to ensure a reliable and secure supply of power across the country.
According to the report, hydropower accounted for 49.33 per cent of Fiji’s electricity generation in 2025, while thermal generation contributed 43.83 per cent and wind generation together with Independent Power Producers accounted for 6.84 per cent.
Mr Gibson said hydropower remains the cornerstone of Fiji’s electricity network.
“Hydropower remains the backbone of Fiji’s electricity system.”
The report notes that the Monasavu Hydropower Scheme generated 496 million units of electricity during the year, continuing to play a vital role in meeting national demand.
EFL said continued investment in renewable energy and electricity infrastructure will be critical as Fiji works towards increasing renewable generation, strengthening energy security and supporting future economic growth.
