Energy Fiji Limited has assured the public that electricity supply across Fiji remains stable and secure despite growing uncertainty in global energy markets linked to geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

In a statement, EFL said there are currently no immediate constraints on its ability to meet national electricity demand, which has exceeded 200 megawatts.

However, the utility acknowledged that Fiji remains vulnerable to global fuel supply disruptions and price volatility, as nearly half of the country’s electricity generation still depends on imported fuel. Fiji’s energy mix currently comprises about 50 to 55 per cent renewable sources, including hydro, biomass, wind and solar, with the remaining 45 to 50 per cent from thermal generation.

EFL said it is taking proactive steps to manage potential risks, including optimising hydro resources and preparing for alternative fuel generation if needed.

Chief executive Fatiaki Gibson said while the energy sector remains resilient, prolonged global disruptions could have downstream impacts.

“Fiji’s energy sector remains resilient, and we are actively managing emerging risks. However, escalated or prolonged global disruptions to physical fuel supply volumes may have downstream adverse impacts,” he said.

EFL is also working closely with fuel suppliers, Government agencies and development partners to ensure operational readiness.

The utility is urging households and businesses to adopt energy-saving practices, including switching off unused appliances and using efficient equipment.

EFL reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity while continuing its transition towards renewable energy.
