THE Republic of Fiji Navy recently participated in the 13th Western Pacific Naval Symposium’s Next Generation Naval Officers Short-Term Programme (WPNS STEP).
The RFN was represented at the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force Staff (JMSDFS) School by Lieutenant Commander Luke Madanavosa.
The program involved thirty-five naval officers from thirty countries, including international students from WPNS member nations.
According to a JMSDFS press statement, dated September 26, the objective of the program was;
n To deepen understanding of Japan’s security and defense policies, defense buildup, history and culture among next generation naval officers from Indo-Pacific nations;
n To promote mutual understanding among participants and build a foundation to advance multilateral cooperation as future naval leaders
In a social media update, the Republic of Fiji Navy said the main aim of the initiative was to foster mutual understanding and camaraderie among naval officers from different nations in order to strengthen regional security.
“Such engagements are crucial for developing officers’ skills in international cooperation and understanding of the regional strategic environment, which in turn helps build relations and understanding to support regional security,” RFN said.
Held between September 30 and October 7, the program featured presentations from participants, study tour, cultural tour and group discussions. Attendees included representatives from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Fiji.
