THE Fiji National University is now back operating under the Ministry of Education and the names of a new
university council will be announced soon, Education Aseri Radrodro has confirmed.

The development comes amid recent governance tensions at the university involving the Council and senior management, with oversight temporarily reassigned to the Prime Minister’s Office before being returned to the MoE.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka last week stated he no longer had direct involvement in council matters, when asked whether he had agreed to a meeting request by the (now former) council that was at loggerheads with Vice Chancellor Unaisi Baba.

“The Council is now in place and they will have to deal with it,” he said.

Yesterday Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro clarified that while the names have been submitted, the
formal process was still underway.

“We have received the names for the new council and we will issue once it’s ready,” he said.

“Yes, FNU has been reassigned to the Ministry of Education.”

After the university reported internal disputes over council authority and administrative procedures
Government transferred oversight to the Office of the Prime Minister, under the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics.
