Education and jobs fuel Fiji’s July overseas exodus

A total of 1,075 Fijians left the country in July for a longer-term absence of 1 year or more, the Fiji Bureau of Statistics has reported.

Employment accounted for a total of 1,138 departures, while education or training was the reason behind 715 departures.

For employment purposes, 337 departed for 3-12 months, and 440 for 1-5 years.

158 for 3-12 months, and 302 for 1-5 years left the county for education or training.

A total of 153 residents emigrated in July, 74 left for 1-5 years and 79 on a permanent basis.

Additionally, 190 individuals left Fiji either for over 5 years or permanently.

A total of 15,667 Fiji residents departed our shores during the month of July of which 13,940 were for a short-term absence of under three months and 652 were for over three months and within 12 months period.
