Last month marked a momentous milestone in the life of 18-year-old Sakiusa Deans Tuicakau Bainivalu, a young man whose journey from humble beginnings to academic excellence is truly inspiring.
Hailing from Tabuya village, Nabukelevu in Kadavu, with maternal roots in Nabalabala, Saivou, Ra, Saki’s story is one of perseverance, dedication, and unwavering faith.
Sakiusa, affectionately known as Saki, is the proud eldest son of Alitia Bainivalu, Fiji’s Minister for Forestry and Fisheries.
His journey through education was not just about personal achievement but a testament to the power of hard work and commitment. Last month, he was honored with the prestigious title of Dux of Queen Victoria School for 2025 — a recognition of his outstanding academic performance and leadership.
Throughout his time at Queen Victoria School, Saki demonstrated exceptional talent and determination. He secured first place in Year 13 Science, and was awarded the titles of Best Mathematics Student, Best Biology Student, Best Chemistry Student, Best Physics Student, and Best Science Student.
Most remarkably, he achieved the highest aggregate score in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination of 2024. His achievements are a shining example of what can be accomplished through perseverance and a steadfast belief in oneself.
To celebrate and honor his accomplishments, his parents organized a heartfelt thanksgiving gathering at their home in Domain, Suva, on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Surrounded by family and friends, they gathered not only to rejoice in his success but to remind him of the values that shaped him along the way: humility, gratitude, and perseverance.
During her speech, Ms Bainivalu expressed her pride and gratitude for Saki’s dedication. She acknowledged his unwavering commitment to his studies and praised his integrity in staying true to the values and teachings passed down through generations. She emphasized that his achievements are not just a reflection of his intelligence but also of his character.
As Saki embarks on the next chapter of his life — whether in further studies, career pursuits, or community service — his mother offered three powerful and simple reminders that she hopes will guide him always:
“Always acknowledge and thank God in all circumstances, both in moments of joy and in times of challenge,” Ms Bainivalu said.
“Never forget where you come from — your family, your roots, and the sacrifices made to reach where you are today,” she said.
“In a world full of possibilities, choose kindness—always be a beacon of compassion and understanding.”
She also took a moment to thank Saki’s dedicated teachers, whose wisdom, encouragement, and inspiration played an essential role in his journey.
“Above all, all thanks to the Almighty for His guidance, protection, and countless blessings — reminding us all that true success is rooted in faith, perseverance, and gratitude.”
During his speech, Sakusa shared that there were days when he experienced hunger while serving as a boarder, highlighting the sacrifices he made in his role.
He also expressed a strong determination to become the top student, or dux, of his school. Additionally, Sakusa mentioned that he took it upon himself to ensure cleanliness, specifically by committing to clean the toilets, as he noticed that the junior students were not maintaining them properly.
Sakiusa’s story is a testament that with faith, hard work, and a humble heart, anyone can rise above challenges and shine brightly. His journey inspires us all to pursue our dreams with integrity and kindness, never forgetting the values that shape us along the way.
