The Suva Retailers Association has taken a positive position in the wake of the National Economic Summit in Suva.

It has confidence that issues discussed in the two-day National Economic Summit will be put into action.

President Jitesh Patel said they were happy to be part of the summit.

He said it was a “good summit I would say”.

“Lot of thinking minds were there, and we came to know about a lot of things that others are facing, our problems and what other industries are facing.

“So it was like a good place where everyone could open up their minds and talk about the issues that we are facing.”

The government, it said, now knew where the issues were. Moving forward, it hoped more meetings would be organised and work would continue to address challenges.

“We are hoping to see that the things that have come out from here are put into action.”

For whatever it is worth, we have said this before, what should matter is the people.

There have been differing opinions on the summit.

Initially attacks were levelled at the kalavata, and the budget set aside for the event which was held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

Perhaps when we reflect on the years that have gone by, we may be able to consider that finally we have some sense of appreciation of how much is spent on such an event.

The important factor is there was engagement inched out by transparency and accountability.

People reacted and voiced their opinion which was a major shift in how the nation once reacted to major events organised using taxpayers’ money over the years.

This is what democracy is all about.

We have a say in determining our destination, our future!

We had an opportunity to have a say in whether the costs were too high or not, and effectively, the people made their opinions known.

How the Government reacts to such an outcry will decide how best we move forward as a nation.

But it is encouraging to see discussions taking place.

It is encouraging to listen to opinions being given with confidence and purpose.

This is the way to go.

People’s opinion must matter.

For in the end, the outcomes of the summit should benefit them.

The average man and woman on the streets wants a life that is better tomorrow than it was yesterday.

They want hope, and the ability to live their dreams.

They want to share in the joys of life, and some of the luxuries that come with an improved lifestyle.

So we can continue to travel the path we are on, or we can decide to make a difference, and be part of the change that must come if we are to improve our lives.

But it is encouraging to see different opinions coming forth on a public platform.

We now wait for action that must come!

And again, we will accept that bold decisions must be made for the betterment of all!
