Here we are again, on Good Friday! Today marks the start of the long Easter weekend.

For Christians around the world, this is a time to reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is a story grounded in the Bible, one that draws the faithful to remember and reflect on the events on Mount Calvary and what they represent.

They will revisit these defining moments of their faith, and they will pause to consider their meaning and significance.

This special weekend also holds different meanings for different people.

We know the faithful will turn to religion, renewing their commitment and reflecting on teachings that have shaped their beliefs since childhood.

We know, for many of them, it is a personal journey, one of prayer, remembrance, and spiritual connection.

For others, this long weekend is a chance to unwind and embrace a break from routine. It is a time to relax, to spend quality moments with family and friends, and to strengthen relationships that often take a back seat during busy weeks.

Some will enjoy the opportunity to reconnect with loved ones. Others, in our diverse and multi-religious society, may celebrate in their own way, perhaps with social gatherings and laughter over a few drinks.

For Christians, however, the focus remains on the journey of Jesus Christ, especially the path he took before his crucifixion, and the ultimate sacrifice he made. It is a reminder of a profound act of love, one that believers say was for the redemption of mankind.

Easter celebrates His resurrection. It’s a symbol of hope, renewal, and life beyond suffering.

We say the message of Easter is powerful and enduring. We say, at its heart lies sacrifice.

As we mark this occasion, let’s reflect on our priorities and the many challenges we face each day. There are people around us struggling to make ends meet, families carrying heavy burdens, and those in need of compassion and support.

Let’s not limit the spirit of sacrifice and empathy. Let’s face it. It cuts across all lines, through cultural, social, and economic lines, and should remind us of the fragility of life and the importance of caring for one another.

Some of us may never fully understand or appreciate the significance of Easter. And that is the reality of a diverse society.

Whatever your perspective, whether Easter is about worship or just a holiday marked by rest and celebration, we hope there is value in pausing to reflect. We say there is value in showing kindness, in being considerate, and in recognising the shared humanity that binds us all.

Perhaps this is an apt time to learn more about the meaning behind Easter, to better understand the beliefs of others, and to foster greater respect for the traditions that shape our communities.

So, let’s make Easter be more than just a long weekend. Let it be a reminder to appreciate what we have, to extend empathy to those around us, and to reflect on how we can make a positive difference in our homes, our communities, and our country.
