DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for External Trade and Communications Manoa Kamikamica says he has received reports from the
Consumer Council of Fiji, the Reserve Bank of Fiji and Government with regards to EBay Shop Fiji.
During a break from Parliament sitting yesterday, he told the media that Government was in the process of investigating how they could
clamp down on the site.
“I’ve received a report from the Consumer Council and they do confi rm that it is not a genuine site and it is getting money from people
without delivering on what it promises,” Mr Kamikamica said.
“Normally, they are based outside of the country and it is hard to get to them.
“But certainly, Government will try and do its best to shut down the service and see what we can do to recover the monies but it’s hard to promise because we are talking about offshore operations.”
He urged members of the public to be aware and not fall into unscrupulous and devious operations online.
Meanwhile, disgruntled Fijians believed to be engaged in the local Ebay Shop Fiji trading have taken to social media to voice their concerns regarding non-payments of daily funds into their account in the past two days.
News of this non-facilitation of payments broke out on social media over the weekend and even into yesterday when those involved discovered that they have been allegedly scammed by the trader.
The Lautoka shop the “business” opened last month is closed with an “Office locked due to rent not paid” sign displayed outside.
The shop is registered as Online Trading Pte Ltd and both mobile numbers displayed outside are switched off.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci also said they were yet to receive any report against the operations of Ebay Shop and if a report was lodged, they would investigate accordingly.
