Earthquake shakes PNG

Update: 6:24PM AN earthquake of 7.1-magnitude around 1.44pm (Fiji time) hit 78.7km ESE of Ralman Village, New Britain, Papua New Guinea, the Mineral Resources Department said.

A tsunami
warning was also issued for coastlines near the epicentre of the earthquake
that jolted PNG, however, there was no
confirmed damaged reports by the Seismology Unit.

“We have
monitored the Tide Gauges across the region and it does not show any major
threat to the Fiji region. Tsunami was triggered but of very small wave
amplitude only in the PNG region which is below 0.3 metres,” the statement read.
