Early start for Athletics Fiji

FIJI athletes have got off their blocks to prepare for the Oceania Athletics Championship which will be held in Fiji later this year.

Athletics Fiji hosted its second competition of the year at the ANZ Stadium in Suva on Saturday.

Athletics Fiji chief development officer Joe Rodan Jr said they wanted regular competitions for the athletes.

“The focus of the Athletics Fiji is to have a regular competition not only in Suva but in the West as well,” he said.

“We have a new track in Lautoka so we will create competition between central and western divisions. The Coca-Cola Games is one of the trials to pick athletes for the Oceania Championship.”

Australia and New Zealand with the other countries in the Oceania region will participate in the Oceania Championship which means Fiji needs to be at the best to tackle them.

“We are still waiting for the Lautoka City Council to give us all clear and once we get that then we will do our best to get there as early as possible and have a meet there,” he said.

“This is a new track and a new stadium so it will be a fast track. Athletes can expect some fast times if athletes are in top shape. The bounce in the rubber is there,” Rodan Jr said.
