Eagles claim AFL title

THE Royal Eagles are the winners of the inaugural Fiji Australian Football League women’s title after defeating Qio Vula 61-41.

The Swans Varerevaki secured the men’s title after proving too strong for the Lions winning 69-39.

Fiji coach Mike Ted Leahy said he was pleased with the performance of the girls in the final.

“The women’s final was a very physical game; you could tell there was a lot of rivalry between the two teams. Playing in a much bigger ground has worked out well for them with the game becoming more fast paced and the players are becoming very skilled,” he said.

He added that the experience in the Swans team had proved to be an advantage for them contributing to their win.

“The Lions had young players and were smaller compared with the Swans. They fought well to stay in the game but they just weren’t strong enough,” he said.

The finals yesterday at Veiuto Primary School grounds marked the end of senior competitions.

The next major Fiji AFL competition is on October 10th where the U15 grades from respective districts will battle for the Fiji Day Cup.

The competition serves as a platform for squad selection for the Fiji team to compete in AFL Oceania cup scheduled for December.
