Hollywood superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has paid an emotional tribute to George “Fiji” Veikoso.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Mr Johnson remembered Mr Veikoso as a gifted artist and cultural beacon whose music uplifted generations of Polynesians around the world.
“I love and miss you my uso. Your beautiful voice was your God given blessing you humbly shared with the world,” he wrote.
“Your whole heart and soul was in every lyric you ever sang. And your beautiful mana was in every word you ever spoke.”
Mr Johnson said Mr Veikoso’s work deeply impacted him personally and culturally.
“Thank you for everything you’ve done to uplift and inspire our Polynesian culture, our Polynesian people and the world, through your soul. And now forever, through your legacy.”
Referencing one of Fiji’s most beloved covers, “My Way,” Johnson revealed a personal connection to the song — one that ties back to his late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia.
“This song ‘My Way’, was the song my grandfather used to sing to me when I was a little boy,” he shared.
“Makes me emotional watching and listening to you sing this… but at some point in life, perhaps near the end — it’s a blessing to be able to say ‘I did it my way.’”
“Rest in peace knowing you moved the world with your voice, made our Polynesian culture proud and most of all — you did it your way.”
Johnson concluded the tribute with “Love you and miss you — see you down the road.”
