Duo’s trial date set

Carpenters Fiji Ltd’s managing director, Daniel Whippy and former National Fire Authority board chairman, John O’Connor will give evidence in a trial set to commence in 10 months.

Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza yesterday fixed a three-week trial period beginning on November 3 in Suva.

Mr O’Connor is charged with abuse of office for gain and Mr Whippy is charged with one count of counselling the commission of an offence.

Both men are alleged to have amended the findings of investigations into an MH warehouse fire that occurred in April 2018.

Prosecutor Mary Takinana intends to produce 38 witnesses, while both men are calling a total of six witnesses, including themselves, to give evidence.

Meanwhile, the court has granted Mr Whippy’s application to travel to India for medical treatment on his knee. He is scheduled to depart on February 1 and return on March 6.

He has also deposited a total of $50,000 as a security bond.

The case is adjourned for trial on November 3.
