While results were mixed for the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team on the opening day of the HSBC SVNS Valladolid tournament in Spain, two players rose above the rest with performances that underlined their importance to the national side.

Playmaker Atelaite Buna Ralivanawa and veteran speedster Reapi Ulunisau were instrumental in keeping Fiji competitive against some of the world’s leading teams.

Buna lived up to her pre-tournament hype as one of the players to watch on the international sevens circuit.

The talented playmaker displayed excellent game management, vision and composure under pressure throughout the day.

Her defining moment came in Fiji’s thrilling victory over the United States when she crossed for the decisive late try that sealed a memorable win.

Beyond the scoreboard, Ralivanawa’s ability to organise the attack, create opportunities for teammates and control possession proved crucial in helping Fiji gain momentum during key stages of the match.

Ulunisau once again demonstrated why she remains one of the most dangerous finishers in world rugby sevens.

Even in Fiji’s defeat to Australia, the experienced winger continued to threaten opposition defences with her pace, footwork and instinctive support play.

Her brilliant solo try against the Australians showcased her ability to create scoring opportunities from limited possession.

Buna’s creativity and Ulunisau’s finishing ability provided the spark for Fiji on day one.

As Fijiana prepare for the knockout stages, the duo’s experience, leadership and attacking threat will be vital if the side is to make a deep run in Valladolid.
