THE Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team, led by coach Osea Kolinisau, flew out to New Zealand today to participate in the Ignite 7s tournament, a crucial step in their preparation for the upcoming HSBC SVNS Dubai 7s next month.
With a squad of 14 players from the extended team, the Fijian players will face tough competition from powerhouse teams like New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and various New Zealand clubs.
Kolinisau views the Ignite 7s tournament as a golden opportunity for the new and young talents within the squad to gain invaluable experience by competing against formidable opponents such as New Zealand and Australia.
He commends the newcomers for their fearless attitude and strong performances alongside the seasoned players, highlighting their potential impact on the team.
“We got a few new boys here, so this tournament will be a good chance for them to prove themselves and earn their side in the team,” said Kolinisau.
“We have been looking at footages of our games last year and have been discussing how we can rectify certain areas.
He adds the warm-up matches against top-tier teams like New Zealand and Australia will serve as a litmus test for the Fijian squad before heading to Dubai.
“It’s a good opportunity to play warm-up matches against New Zealand and Australia teams, especially before Dubai.
Kolinisau expresses eagerness to witness the new players in action, especially against the high-caliber opposition, providing them with an opportunity to thrive under pressure and display their capabilities.
“I get to see players that I have not seen a lot take the field, especially the youngsters, it gives me a chance to see them play and see how they do against Australia and New Zealand teams.
“It is a good heat out especially to the new boys, and especially for me getting to see what they can do against quality opposition.”
Kolinisau confirms that he will name his squad for the Dubai 7s a week after the team returns from the Ignite 7s, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
Meanwhile, Fiji will head into the Dubai 7s tournament as the defending champions, having beaten Spain 19-5 in last year’s final.
This year’s competition format will have no quarterfinals, with only the top two teams from each pool advancing directly to the semifinals.
Fiji is pooled with South Africa, Argentina, and France.
The Dubai 7s will be held from November 29 to December 1.
