The Department of Immigration processed and approved 3807 former Fiji citizenship applications from January 2007 to December 2022, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua has reported to Parliament.

This was done under Section 5 of the 2013 Constitution that allowed dual citizenship for those born in Fiji but had become citizens of another country.

“Total number of citizenship applications issued may not be the same as number of passport applications processed and issued to former Fiji citizens, as some preferred to have only one passport while details of the other passport are updated in the system,” said Mr Tikoduadua.

“At this stage, the department doesn’t have records of former citizens with Fiji passports.

“We assume that most will apply for a Fiji passport once they retain their citizenship.”
