Head of Goundar shipping George Goundar has raised serious concerns about drug issues among crew members and passengers, urging the Government to implement mandatory drug testing and stricter regulations to ensure safe travel.
“We’ve got a big issue with drugs on board the vessels. That’s why we’ve raised it with the Government,” Mr Goundar said.
“They have to do something with the crew. They’ve got to get mandatory drug testing for the crew.”
He highlighted the risks associated with drugs and alcohol for both seafarers and passengers.
The company has taken steps to address these issues, including firing crew members found with drugs or alcohol.
“We just fired a few guys last week for drugs and alcohol, which is very risky for seafarers and passengers. We need to clean the shipping act here.”
Mr Goundar also called for increased transparency and co-operation with the police to combat drug trafficking among passengers.
“We’ve been asking the police. They need to be more transparent on board the vessel. Or we can facilitate the police on board the vessel. The drugs are just rapidly moving nowadays.
“Some of our crews are getting involved in drugs now. Selling drugs out in the outer islands. And that has to stop.”
