THE Fiji Police Force is investigating their own officers following allegations that they destroyed a farmhouse and crops while searching for a suspected marijuana operation in Kadavu.
A video circulating online shows a farmer claiming his property was severely damaged, with crops and vegetables destroyed, trees cut down, and personal belongings, including clothing torn and thrown into the mud.
In the footage, the farmer claims that officers, who were in the area pursuing a suspect, targeted his farm after suspecting him of cultivating marijuana.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that statements from the officers involved have been requested as part of an initial inquiry.
He stressed that the Fiji Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on abuse of authority.
“If there are any breaches of the law, criminal investigations will be initiated,” Mr Tudravu said.
He added that although the claims remain allegations at this stage, they are serious and risk undermining public trust and confidence in the force.
“Such actions will not be condoned, assuring members of the public that the matter will be investigated thoroughly.”
The operation in question took place on the morning of March 18, 2026, after officers received information about the cultivation of marijuana in the Lavidi area.
Police said that upon reaching the Waiqereqere terrain, officers encountered a farmhouse where a 40-year-old man was arrested.
Following questioning, the suspect allegedly led officers to his farm, where more than 2600 plants believed to be marijuana were discovered and uprooted.
At the location, officers also found another farmhouse occupied by 15 youths. All individuals were escorted from the area along with the seized plants. The youths were later released after questioning.
Police acknowledged that the operation team passed by the farmhouse shown in the viral video while escorting the group. However, they have denied any involvement in the destruction of farming equipment or property seen in the footage.
Investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
