THERE are cases of drug packs washing ashore on islands in Lau, according to the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) executive director Vani Catanasiga.
Ms Catanasiga said these packs were believed to be from yachts and fishing vessels.
“There have been reports of yachts docking at secluded beaches,” she said.
She said a youth leader from an island in Lau was sharing his concerns regarding the use of meth or widely known as ice on the island.
“He’s been trying to encourage his peers to engage themselves in communal work that’s happening across some of the villages there rather than involving them in drugs.”
She said some of the youth were desensitised with issues occurring at their home island.
“They talk about this openly.”
She said this was occurring due to the lack of presence of government agencies on the island group.
“I believe there are some urgencies that need to be driven into the social ills these maritime islands are facing.”
