PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is upset with the latest alleged drowning incident that claimed the lives of four people in waters off Viria East at Vatuwaqa in Suva over the weekend.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Mr Bainimarama said he was disappointed because it was only last Friday that he launched the Water Safety Council’s report for 2014 when another alleged tragic drowning accident took place again.
Mr Bainimarama said more vigilance was crucial to avoid accidents such as that which happened over the weekend.
“We must do everything possible as a community to try to avert these tragedies by giving young people the swimming skills they need and appropriate information about dangerous currents to reduce the risk of drowning.
“This is a terrible blow for these young people’s families and the entire nation.”
At the same time, Mr Bainimarama conveyed the condolences of all members of the house to the grieving families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them, just as they are with the people of Vanuatu.”
It was earlier reported a group of five young males went out swimming on Sunday afternoon and only one made it alive to shore after strong currents swept them away.
