Overall crime dropped by 18 per cent in the first quarter, with all five policing divisions recording decreases between August to October.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu released the figures yesterday, confirming 4049 cases were reported during the quarter compared with 4960 for the same period last year.

Serious crime also recorded a 35 per cent decrease.

Mr Tudravu said the downward trend reflected targeted operations and tighter monitoring by divisional teams.

Drug-related offences also fell by 30 per cent.

Police recorded 334 drug cases during the quarter.

Of these, 299 were for unlawful possession, 33 for unlawful cultivation and two for unlawful importation.

“The reductions are due to the tough approach adopted when Operation Sasamaki was launched in March, and up until today.”
