A total of 600 drones will illuminate Suva’s sky to celebrate 50 years of China-Fiji diplomatic relations.

The Chinese Embassy in Suva, in partnership with the Suva City Council, will launch the drone show on September 27.

Chinese ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian told the media on Tuesday the show would be part of a grand carnival organised by the Suva City Council and the Chinese Embassy to commemorate 50 years of Fiji-China diplomatic relationship.

“The event will be open to the general public,” Mr Zhou said.

“Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate together.

“The Chinese community will set up stalls at Albert Park. Throughout the day, they’ll display goods and cultural stuff and Chinese Embassy together with the Chinese Cultural Centre, Confucius Institute of USP will also set up stalls for the public.

“We will give away special gifts and will carry out cultural exchange experiences.”

Suva City Council acting chief executive officer Tevita Boseiwaqa also detailed the council’s support for the upcoming carnival.

“We are working at two levels,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.

“One is the national level, or bilateral relations and the other is the local government level.

“At a local government level, we are also doing our part through co-ordination and collaboration.

“It coincides with the Hibiscus, so we discussed how we can work together.

“We have worked on a program to ensure that there’s no conflict. We have harmonised the program. For the drone, it will be held at 6pm onwards and for the Hibiscus as usual the crowning is from 7.30pm.

“So, we’ll — more or less — have two venues. People will have the choice to visit both.”

He said those at the foreshore would also be able to see the drones in the air that would lighten up the city.

Mr Zhou said the drones with colourful lights would also portray images and prints of Fiji’s relationship with China.
