THE Turaga na Gonesau and Fijian medical practitioner Dr Ratu Joji Malani was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Science by the University of Otago in New Zealand last Saturday.
In the presence of his family, Dr Malani was bestowed one of the university’s most prestigious honours, usually given to outstanding graduates and those who have made an exceptional contribution to the university.
A proud alumnus, Dr Malani also gifted the University with a portrait of the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who was previously awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Otago.
According to Oceania Hospitals Pte Ltd, Dr Malani has been in the medical fraternity for 43 years in the field of general medicine and having a specialist interest in gastroenterology, nephrology and chest medicine.
“He started his career in New Zealand after graduating in MBCHB from the Otago Medical School,” Oceania Hospitals Pte Ltd stated.
“Dr Malani was also the assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Hawaii and later became the Associate Professor of Medicine at the Fiji National University.”
Dr Malani is currently serving at the Oceania Hospitals Pte Ltd in Suva as a Consultant Physician and Nephrologist.
