Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad says he is “deeply honoured” to work alongside Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in steering Fiji towards a new era of unity, dialogue, and mutual respect.

Speaking at Fiji Day celebrations in Washington D.C., marking the 55th anniversary of Fiji’s independence, Professor Prasad paid tribute to the country’s founding leaders — the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, A.D. Patel, and S.M. Koya — for their vision and courage in securing Fiji’s peaceful transition to self-government in 1970.

“As the leader of the National Federation Party, I am proud to stand on the shoulders of those visionary leaders who helped shape our nation’s destiny,” he said.

Professor Prasad also honoured the late Justice Jai Ram Reddy and his collaboration with Mr Rabuka in crafting the 1997 Constitution, describing it as a milestone of reconciliation and inclusion.

“Today, I am deeply honoured to work alongside Prime Minister Rabuka.”

“Together, we are committed to a new political era defined by freedom, unity, dialogue, and mutual respect,” he said.

He highlighted the government’s efforts to restore democracy, repeal restrictive media laws, and strengthen freedom of expression.

Economically, he noted progress in reducing Fiji’s debt-to-GDP ratio from 90% to 77% within two and a half years.

Professor Prasad urged all Fijians to uphold the spirit of independence by fostering dignity, equality, and opportunity.

“Our unity is our strength—and together, we will build a brighter, more prosperous Fiji.”
