TO win a medal at the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Tuckers Ice Cream Games calls for celebration for the Cakaudrove team.
At midday yesterday, the Cakaudrove team celebrated two medals in the girls under-13 shotput and the girls U10 cricket ball throw.
In the U10 cricket ball throw, Adi Alisi Uenavanua claimed gold with a throw of 45.69m while Teresia Wati won bronze in the girls U13 shotput with a throw of 10.68m.
Tacilevu Village School teacher Ravitesh Prasad who is part of the travelling contingent said winning these two medals is a huge deal not only for their schools but for their respective villages.
“It’s a special achievement especially when we are coming from all over Cakaudrove. The schools are in the interior so when they win a gold, silver or bronze, that is a big achievement to the villages, and we are very proud of them.
“We have 125 athletes participating, it’s a big struggle to bring them over but we managed to do that. We have to give thanks to our head of schools, trainers, parents and our supporters,” he said.
The team has set high targets particularly in the girls’ division.
“We are aiming high, last year the girls’ division finished third but this year we are trying to move our step ahead.
It all depends on our athletes, but we give thanks to our teachers who have been sacrificing in the two weeks of camp, sacrificing their time away from families, all for our children and athletes.”
The team trained for a span of two weeks within the seven clusters that make up the Cakaudrove team.
