Popular fast-food chain DMC has announced it will remove all beef products from its menu, citing inclusivity and sensitivity to the needs of Fiji’s diverse community.
This follows revelations by Consumer Council of Fiji that DMC was using the same oil to prepare chicken and beef food.
In a public statement, DMC Management said the decision was made after listening to customer feedback and wider community concerns over time.
“After listening carefully to our customers and the wider community over time, DMC Management has made the decision to remove all beef products from our menu,” the statement said.
“This decision has been taken in the spirit of inclusivity, allowing us to better cater to the needs, confidence and sensitivities of our diverse community.”
DMC also addressed concerns about its current cooking processes, acknowledging that some items are prepared using the same cooking oil due to equipment and power limitations.
“Due to current machinery and power limitations, our fries and chicken nuggets, chicken wings, chicken popcorn, chicken kebab and chicken patties are prepared using the same oil,” the statement said, adding that all other chicken items are prepared separately.
The company said it was important to be upfront with customers about how food is prepared.
“We believe it is important to be fully transparent with our customers regarding our food preparation processes,” management stated.
DMC confirmed it is actively exploring options to improve its operations, including investing in additional equipment and increasing power capacity to allow for greater separation of cooking processes.
The move has been welcomed by consumer advocates as a step toward greater transparency and respect for cultural and religious dietary needs in Fiji’s food service industry.
