Only 10 houses at the new site for displaced Nabavatu villagers on Vanua Levu “have reached the beam stage”, according to Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka.

Mr Ditoka said these homes were to be completed by December, after which the teams would immediately move on to constructing the remaining 16 houses.

“The ministry remains fully committed to ensuring the families of Nabavatu are safely and permanently resettled in quality homes,” he said.

While responding to queries from this newspaper, Mr Ditoka said the 16 homes were at the footings stage, with block laying already underway.

“We are expected to reach beam level this week.”

Mr Ditoka said approval for cement pouring for the rest of the 11 homes was granted two weeks ago.

“These homes have also reached the footing stage,” he added.

Despite earlier delays caused by weather and soil conditions, Mr Ditoka said steady progress was being achieved across all terraces.
