AS Parliament begins its debate on the 2025-2026 National Budget today, a non profit organisation in Labasa has expressed its disappointment that its funding request was not considered.
This is because funds for a planned community centre to be built in the area are not provided for in the 2025-2026 fiscal year, despite a proposal being made during the national budget consultations.
VuCare founder Amelia Simmons said the community centre would provide a safe space for victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence and women and children who have nowhere else to go.
“It would also address the growing problem of drug abuse, especially in the northern parts of the country,” she said.
The organisation had requested $800,000 to fund the construction of the centre.
“The foundation has already secured land for the project and has been paying for the lease, but has not received any financial support from the Government.”
She said they also sought funding for a community centre in the previous financial year.
“Unfortunately, neither the last nor this current budget has allocated any funds for the centre.
“This is very disappointing for me and for many people who see how important this project is.”
She said the foundation is now asking the Ministry of Rural Development to consider funding the centre.
While she understands the challenges non profit organisations face in getting government support, she said there is a need for everyone to work together to solve the many problems associated with drug abuse and violence.
“If we don’t, the effects of drug and sexual abuse will be very serious.
“The Government must get involved and help make a difference.”
