A MAHATMA Gandhi Memorial High School long distance runner carried not just her pace but her ambition, her discipline, and the hopes of her family watching from afar.

These were the factors that propelled Merekeleni Ratubaka to her gold medal runs in the 2025 sub-junior girls 1500m and 3000m events.

This time the Draunivi in Ra lass who carries strong maternal ties to Natolevu, Tavua, aimed to protect and maintain this legacy.

When the race began, the competition was fierce. Every runner on the track had come prepared, but Ratubaka stayed focused.

“The race was so competitive and tough,” she said.

“But I did not lose hope because I trust in myself.”

Ratubaka secured a gold medal defining moment in her growing athletics journey.

It was a victory built on weeks of discipline and sacrifice.

“After I was informed that I had been selected for the zone meet, I ensured that I kept myself fit and mentally prepared.”

Yet even as she celebrated, her focus had already shifted towards the Fiji Finals.

“I look forward to the Coca-Cola Games and will train hard to improve my running time.

“The competition will be much tougher compared to last year.”

Behind her success lies a powerful source of strength which is her family and despite the distance, their presence was felt every step of the way.

“I want to thank my parents for coming all the way from Ra to be part of my achievement.”

Ratubaka’s story is far from finished with the 3000m and 4x400m races today.
