It was a disappointing night for Fijian boxer Tomu Gaunavou who was stopped in the second round by Abdoulaye Mayweather in a super middleweight contest in Eatons Hill in Queensland, Australia.

Gaunavou could not settle well in the fight as his opponent dominated from the first bell.

It was in the second round when he was floored and the referee stopped the fight.

He received a punch to his stomach which he could not recover from.

Asia Pacific matchmaker/coordinator Simon Naushad said this was a learning curve and boxers were expected to improve in future.

“Quite often we have seen Fijian boxers, they cannot sustain body punches. The same happened with Siliveni Nawai and Ratu Isikia Rokoyawa in the past. We are now planning to set them up in a professional gym and try and keep them in camp three weeks before they go for professional fights. Overall performance is OK,” he said.

Gaunavou was one of many Fijian boxers who were part of a promotion in Australia.
