China wants direct flights between the Chinese mainland and Fiji “as soon as possible”, said China’s ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian.
Mr Zhou was speaking at last week’s commemoration in Suva of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
“China is ready to work with the Fijian side to launch direct flights between Chinese mainland and Fiji as soon as possible,” Mr Zhou told guests, among them Government ministers and President of Fiji Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
“By doing so, more Chinese tourists will be attracted to Fiji, which will contribute to your economy.
“Fijians are welcome to visit China and explore what this big country has to offer.”
In his speech, Ambassador Zhou promoted mutual cooperation in growing the Fiji-China friendship and China’s urging for a direct flight comes as part of its plans to promote people-to-people exchanges. “Amity between the people holds the key to sound state-to-state relations.
“China will continue to send art troupes and medical teams, and provide Chinese Government Scholarships.
“This will serve to promote cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between our two peoples,” Mr Zhou said.
Raising the visibility of Fiji as a tourist destination in China is work in progress for major partners.
Last year, Tourism Fiji, Fiji Airways and Trip.com Group, a leading global travel service provider, signed a three-year strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further Fiji’s exposure in the Greater China market and to promote the ‘Where Happiness Comes Naturally’ Fiji brand platform.
Fiji Airways’ flights to China is currently through its codeshare with Hong Kong Airlines.
